Adware Remover – Hero, Villian or Both?
It never ceases to amaze me that the irony of the following scenario is often overlooked by the circumstance of the actual outcomes achieved. I am of course refering to the setting in which the creator of an obtrusive nuisance ultimately becomes the hero to save the day and gain all sorts of accolades in the process.
Who am I talking about here?
Dale Begg-Smith of course, the skiing software geek turned Olympian for Australia (turncoat from native Canada) and gaining a Silver medal in Vancouver 2010, for his newly adopted country, was the inventor of the problem and the solution of Pop Up Advertising. It has been stated that this guy has made an estimated $40 million dollars, yep a serious millionaire in anybody’s books.
Malicious spyware, popup advertising and other not so fun Internet stuff have been his alleged creations, as his fingerprints seem to be all over the net for this type of dodgy activity. But what seems to be such an obvious irony is this guy is also responsible for creating software to remove his pests, strangely writing (sic) his wrongs.
It reminds me of my suspicions I keep in the back of my mind regarding the larger software companies that also peddle the antivirus software and the like. Can’t help but think how it is in their best interests to insure themselves and their economic futures by, in some way nurturing the hackers, crackers and virus “heros” of tomorrow.
Now it would be a little (or a lot) foolish to do what Begg-Smith has done, and leaving calling cards all over the blogosphere to be trailed right back to the source. No I think that they could be indirectly sponsoring the next worm attack by simpler less traceable means.
Everybody knows that most viruses are created by wannabee tagging narcistic heros and what better place to find these junior geniuses, than look into the universities of code, yes that’s right the computer science labs across the educational realm. Sponsorship of making sure kids from underprivileged environments get a place in the elite schools, may at first seem a worthy objective but underlying this could be a malicious intent to foster the talents of those with a chip on their socio-economic shoulders.
This is highly speculative and I am probably just making a dumb uneducated guess here, but one can’t be blamed for seeing a smidge of the Dale Begg-Smith’s here, as there is just so much to gain from manufacturing not only the Super Hero who dashes in to save the day, but also conjuring up the Black Hat wearing bad guy in the first place.
